Rick Wartzman, Director. Before joining the Institute, Rick worked for two decades in newspapers. He began his career at The Wall Street Journal, where he served in a variety of positions, including White House correspondent and founding editor of the paper’s weekly California section. He joined the Los Angeles Times in 2002 as business editor and, in that role, helped shape “The Wal-Mart Effect,” which won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. Rick later became editor of the newspaper’s Sunday magazine, West. He is the co-author, with Mark Arax, of the best-seller The King of California: J.G. Boswell and the Making of a Secret American Empire, which was selected as one of the 10 best books of 2003 by the San Francisco Chronicle and one of the 10 best nonfiction books of the year by the Los Angeles Times. It also won, among other honors, a California Book Award and the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. His next book, Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning and Banning of The Grapes of Wrath, is set to be published by PublicAffairs in fall 2008. Rick is also an Irvine senior fellow at the New America Foundation.

Zachary First, Assistant Director.  Zach joined the Drucker Institute after a 10-year career in higher education. He worked most recently as the inaugural assistant dean at Olin College, a new undergraduate engineering institution founded with a $430 million gift from the F. W. Olin Foundation, where he led the invention and implementation of the judicial and residence life programs. Zach received his B.A. in philosophy from Haverford College, and his masters and doctorate degrees in higher education from Harvard University. His doctoral dissertation research focused on the connection between leadership tactics and organizational performance. He also currently serves as principal investigator for a study of innovation in higher education funded by the Spencer Foundation.

Christina Johnson, Program Manager. Christina comes to the Institute with several years' experience in film and television production and development, including work on network primteime hits Grey’s Anatomy and Criminal Minds, and the feature film Casanova. She served most recently as the program manager for Los Angeles-based Big Sunday, a nonprofit that annually produces the nation’s largest city-wide weekend of volunteerism. Immediately after college, Christina taught English in Japan on the JET program. She earned a B.A. in English from Amherst College.

Joseph A. Maciariello, Academic Director. In addition to his work at the Institute, Joe is the Horton Professor of Management at the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. He collaborated with Peter Drucker to publish The Daily Drucker and The Effective Executive in Action, three Internet executive development modules entitled Leading Change and two articles on management in the social sector. In addition, he has written three articles providing a systematic, integrated description of some of the major works of Peter Drucker: “Peter F. Drucker on a Functioning Society” (Leader to Leader, Summer 2005), “Mastering Peter Drucker’s The Effective Executive” (Leader to Leader, Summer 2006) and a book chapter, “Peter F. Drucker on Executive Leadership and Effectiveness” (in Leader of the Future 2). He teaches the course “Drucker on Management” for MBA and Executive MBA students and has developed the Peter F. Drucker Curriculum Project for use at the Drucker/Ito School and for universities and professional societies throughout the world. Joe has abridged and updated Drucker’s 1973 classic, Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices, which will be released by HarperCollins in early 2008.

Jacob High, Archivist. Jacob has trained at Claremont Graduate University in archival studies and history. He is finishing up his M.A. in American history and also received his undergraduate degree in history at Brigham Young University. Much of his personal work has focused on the development of industrial innovation and technology in post-Gold Rush California.

Derek Bell, Consultant. Derek works closely with the Institute on a variety of projects. He runs Mosaic Trust, a boutique literary agency and social-sector consulting firm based in Brentwood, Tenn. Derek has a deep background in public relations, marketing and the publishing industry.
